Cornelia Hernes is a distinguished artist known for her mastery in classical painting. She studied at The Florence Academy of Art in Italy, where she later became a Principal Instructor (2008–2020). Hernes has exhibited internationally, including solo shows in her native Norway. She has also participated in prestigious group exhibitions across Europe and North America, including at The Salmagundi Club in New York, The European Museum of Modern Art in Barcelona, and Arcadia Gallery in California. Her works have garnered critical acclaim and numerous accolades, including second place in the drawing category at the 12th Annual ARC International Salon. Today, Cornelia teaches globally through online courses and workshops, sharing her deep knowledge of classical techniques with aspiring artists.

In this self portrait, Cornelia explores the dynamic interaction between light, color, and form. The warm, orange glow of the background enhances the subtle green and violet hues in her complexion. From a distance, we experience the portrait as a silhouette against the light. As you move closer, more detail and subtle form begin to emerge, such as the careful handling of light on the face, and the poised hand holding the brush. Cornelia captures herself in a moment of stillness, with the brush positioned in a way that suggests a moment between contemplation and creation. Notice the accentuation of vermilion red paint on the tip of the brush, representing a love, passion, and dedication to the craft of painting.
