Can I Go With You?, 2025
Oil on Wood Panel
16 x 32

Oil on Linen Mounted on Cradled Panel

Kate Kristian was raised in a small town in Northern California, surrounded by nature. From an early age, she had a strong inclination towards creativity, focusing particularly on art. Her dedication deepened throughout adolescence, leading her to pursue a Fine Arts degree at a local community college while simultaneously enrolled in high school. She began her classical training at the Russian River Atelier (2018–2020) before moving to New York City to study at the Grand Central Atelier (2020–2024). Each year as a student, she was accepted into the Hudson River Fellowship, an experience that shaped her artistic and professional development. She now teaches drawing in the core program at the Grand Central Atelier and paints from her home studio in Brooklyn, NY.

Kristian’s painting Can I Go With You? carries a dual meaning. First, it reflects the idea that art is transportive. Great paintings have long served as “windows” into an artist’s life and soul, inviting viewers into new emotional spaces and offering a momentary escape from reality. In this piece, she transports the viewer to the foothills of Northern Nevada, where her parents now reside.

The second meaning explores the idea that there is no final destination in a painter’s journey — no ultimate point of perfection, like the idealized “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” Instead, the painting reflects how one perceives the space between dreams and reality. It is not about grandeur or technical mastery alone, but rather the unseen moments, stories, and miracles along the way – elements that make painting truly beautiful.
