Iris, Daisies, Daffodils, 2023
Oil on Brass
39 x 27.5

Oil on Linen Mounted on Cradled Panel

Iris, Daisies, Daffodils celebrates the miracle of spring and its sense of rebirth and freedom outdoors, in the warm sunlight after winter. Here, the artist’s daughter, Iris, is amidst a carpet of daisies, picking flowers to make a crown — a simple, fleeting moment that may stir childhood memories of our own.

”Light, time, and emotion are always inspirational to me, whether painting the ever changing landscape or a quiet interior. I search for the essence of my subject that goes beyond its visual reality. Working directly from nature and from memory, I always try to capture my experience and relationship with my subject. I’m fascinated with working on copper and other metal surfaces, which offer a beautiful warmth and luminosity. With their endless possibilities, I find myself continually rediscovering and pushing myself technically. My family life and travels continue to be inspiration for my work.”

Melissa completed an intensive art foundation course at the Slade School of Art in London in 2003. She then enrolled at the Florence Academy of Art, earning a three-year diploma in painting and a fourth year of specialization. Melissa is the founding director of the six-week intensive workshop at the Florence Academy of Art, which involves drawing, painting, and art history. Her work is represented by Grenning Gallery (Sag Harbor, New York), Jack Meier Gallery (Houston, Texas), and Beaux Arts Bath Gallery (Bath, UK). Her work can be found in private and public collections across the UK, Channel Islands, Europe, and the USA, including the Accademia della Crusca in Florence.
