The Chef, 2025
Oil on Canvas
32 x 40
Oil on Linen Mounted on Cradled Panel
Rodrigo Mateo was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He immigrated to the United States at an early age, where he has been a resident ever since. Always drawn to drawing and painting, his artistic journey has been on a winding road of differing experiences. Graduating college with a degree in photography, his passion for art led him to continually refine and perfect his means of expression. His formal painting education began at the Grand Central Atelier under the guidance of Jacob Collins, followed by an informal apprenticeship with Michael Klein, and later in the studios of Paul Ingbretson.
The Chef is a portrait of the artist’s step father, Nir Adar. While studying at Grand Central Atelier, Rodrigo worked with Nir to help fund his tuition costs. Mr. Adar, a chef turned food stylist, worked in advertising, where he dressed up foods to enhance their value and appeal. An exacting employer, Nir demanded attention to detail, quick thinking, and observation, as everything had to be prepared for photography in perfect timing — especially when ice cream was melting on set.
The Chef endeavors to embody the keenness of mind, intensity, and pride Mr. Adar brings to his work. It is also a thank you note for the many years of employment that afforded the artist to continue his training.
As a side note, at 4 o’clock, an espresso was always promptly required — and it had to be served hot, or else...
