“I was fortunate to have had the opportunity to study with Richard Lack at the studio school he founded – Atelier Lack – graduating in the mid-eighties. Mr. Lack had been a student of R.H. Ives Gammell who in turn had studied with William McGregor Paxton, one of the ‘Boston Ten’ of American Impressionists back in the early twentieth century.

“The training was rigorous and optics based, the artist that we most held in the highest esteem was Diego Valazquez. In my forty years of painting since then, my respect and esteem for his work has only grown.

“Impressionism is in a sense an attempt to paint not specific objects, but rather the air in between the objects and ourselves. We most often think of color when to referring to impressionism – that is a component, just not the most important one, as Valazquez proves. This piece was done in respect to his genius as well as a personal challenge, with Sebastian staring me down the entire time.”
