“Growing up in a suburb of Boston, the yards were small, and next door to our house was a vacant lot where we climbed the willow trees, ate fruit from the pear and apple trees, and played baseball. Eventually, the lot was sold, and a house was built; I never got over it. I think, subconsciously, my devotion to landscape painting is a way to recover that lost landscape that I loved so much.
“As a teenager, I worked with my father who was a muralist, and my best teacher. I graduated from Massachusetts College of Art and also studied sight-size figure drawing for two years, which significantly improved my drawing ability
.
“Into the Mystic, the Hudson River was painted from my imagination and plein air sketches. I was interested in the tension between the peaceful, contemplative foreground and the turbulence of the city beyond the haze. There are no figures in this scene, so the boat belongs to you – the viewer – bringing you into the scene, now a part of the artwork. Does the river connect you to or protect you from the city? That’s for you to decide.”
