A native Californian, Julia Albo earned her BFA from Sonoma State University. Driven by a desire for technical mastery, she moved to New York City in 2021 to immerse herself in a four-year program at the prestigious Grand Central Atelier (GCA). Studying under esteemed artists such as Jacob Collins and Colleen Barry, she developed a foundation in drawing and painting from life. This atelier training instilled in her a deep reverence for craftsmanship that extends from fine art to high fashion.

In her piece A Study of Nellie, Julia painted the subject from life during the evening sessions at GCA. While Nellie posed nude, Julia conceptually fitted her in a dress designed by Cucculelli Shaheen. The background was invented and went through multiple iterations before reaching its final state. She also included a “drawing” of Nellie within the piece to reference the initial study created during the first few days of the pose. Altogether, this painting brings together Julia’s classical training with her own creative ideas.
