Mae grew up in the countryside of rural Virginia, spending long stretches of time in nature, wandering the farms and fields around her home. As a child she drew often, but art was set aside in her teens, not returning to it until later in life after many years working in the tech world. After such a long period in shoes that didn’t fit, teaching herself to paint felt both revelatory and deeply familiar, and has been her focus ever since. Her paintings are quiet, intimate, and deeply personal, often featuring herself or small details gathered from the spaces around her. Her work is now held in a number of collections, including the Bennett Collection of Women Realists and the permanent collection of the New Salem Museum of Fine Art.
“The Box is a painting of... well, a box that was given to me as a gift many years ago. It was presented exactly as it is shown here – roses, birds, and all. It is one of my very precious possessions and I hope the scene feels as beautiful and tender to the viewer as it does to me.”
