Paul attended Boston University College of Fine Arts, graduating in 1979. Contrary to the trends of that time, Boston University provided an educational foundation that emphasized the fundamentals of classical art training: anatomy and form, color, composition, and draftsmanship. He has been living on Cape Cod since 1993.
The Fisherman’s Return depicts a commercial fisherman, originally from Jamaica, working out of Chatham Harbor. The activity of the working waterfront is a recurring theme in Schulenburg’s paintings.
“The labor of the fishermen and women is so very different from what I do. Yet I feel a certain connection in that we are both engaged in work that reaches back to humanity’s earliest days. Long before recorded history, people caught fish for food, and they also made drawings – if only on cave wall or in the sand. We are both engaged with ancient occupations that still exist, in a delicate balance in the modern world."
