Rodrigo Mateo was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and immigrated to the United States at an early age. He currently resides in New York City with his wife and son. With an early interest in drawing and painting, his artistic development followed a winding path that ultimately led to classical training in both disciplines. After graduating from college with a degree in photography, his passion for art continued to drive a search for a more complete means of expression. It was at the Grand Central Atelier, under artist Jacob Collins, where Rodrigo established his foundational skill set in drawing and painting. This was followed by an informal apprenticeship with Michael Klein, and continued in the studios of Paul Ingbretson.
A Song of Hope is a painting inspired by musically inclined works in the visual arts, from Piero della Francesca’s Nativity to Chardin’s musical still lives and Joseph Decamp’s guitarist. These paintings stir the imagination with sound and mood. While music unfolds in time and painting exists in space, this work humbly seeks to follow their example, inviting the viewer to complete the work and shape its meaning.
