Timothy Rees was drawn to the arts after pursuing a premed degree, and has committed his life to its pursuit ever since. Though he had no formal training, an intense study of historical texts and paintings provided him the tools to explore his love of naturalism, connecting with viewers through romantic images of childhood and various aspects of life.

This painting, like his other works, was conceived and staged, though done so in a way that feels like a spontaneous moment in time. “I took my family on location to the beach, costumes in hand, and had them pose for me when the sun was rising. I sketched them and painted the landscape each morning, because I felt a photograph couldn’t capture the right atmosphere and colors. I wanted ‘Morning Song’ to feel like a quiet walk in nature, with its gentle noise beginning to stir the day.”

Focusing heavily on pictorial design and careful posing of his figures, Rees allows the viewer to put themselves and loved ones in the pictures, inspiring them to feel a shared human experience in each of his works.
