In this five day workshop artists will learn the Fundamentals of Portrait Drawing in idyllic New England surrounded by the world renowned collection of Contemporary and Historical artworks of the New Salem Museum.

Artists Tyler Berry and Chelsea Bard will lead students in this intensive week of Portrait Drawing. An emphasis will be placed on structure and anatomy, an approach to likeness through careful observation of proportion, skeletal landmarks, and abstract shape design. Students will also learn to create a sculptural quality to their portraits through in-depth analysis of the light and form.

The process begins with the block-in stage, aiming to capture character and examination of proportion, structure, and simple light and shadow. After the block in, students will begin modeling and articulating the forms through a consideration of volume, light and anatomy. Students will hone their abilities and knowledge with the guidance of master draftsmen in real time and in the company of the likes of John Singer Sargent, Andrew Wyeth and Edgar Maxence. On breaks they will journey to

specific paintings and drawings to draw forth concepts and principles of great works in the flesh. Tyler and Chelsea will also bring a selection of their work for display and as a teaching tool.

Both instructors will trade off instructing and demonstrating between mornings and afternoons. Students of all skill levels are welcome, though some experience in drawing is encouraged.
