Born in 1987, Caleb Clark grew up in the rural Northeast Kingdom of Vermont. In 2006, he moved to Asheville, NC to study drawing and painting at The Fine Arts League of the Carolinas. Here he apprenticed under the School’s founder, Benjamin F. Long and later assisted Long on fresco murals throughout the Carolinas. Caleb’s work has grown to include elements of classical and contemporary painting, combining traditional techniques with present day subject matter. Caleb currently works and teaches from his studio in Asheville, NC.
“This painting is of my partner, Liz. She wears a May crown of flowers and her mother’s winter jacket from the 1970s. Liz runs her family’s vegetable and fruit farm in Western North Carolina. In painting this portrait, I wanted to depict the strength and grit she possesses as a farmer while facing the promise and uncertainty of a new growing season.”
