“Tick-Tock is a reference to the Vanitas paintings of the 17th-century Dutch old masters, which are meant to remind the viewer of the transient nature of life and the futility of earthly possessions. I worked on this piece off and on over the course of nine months in 2025, on the cusp of celebrating my fiftieth year, revising it several times along the way. It’s filled with various allusions to mortality such as skulls, flowers, fruit, butterflies and soap bubbles. While some may think of this an unpleasant topic, I find it to be fertile ground artistically.
“Since I’m an avid collector of various objects and antiquities, I love the process of creating a narrative by assembling my various items and props. The act of painting allows me to distinguish, through various applications of paint, the different surfaces, such as glass, the delicate petals of flowers, or the dense, uneven surface of bone.
“Despite the subject matter, or maybe because of it, I find it to be one of the most beautiful and fulfilling paintings I’ve made.”
