“This painting is a subjective concept – it is up to the viewer to read into the symbolism of the piece, and perhaps themselves. The flying vultures could represent decay and greed, or resourcefulness via avarice. To me, the carefully placed vulture’s wing to the woman’s neck represents suffocation. The laughing hyena that is blocking her path could represent deceit and cunning, or female strength and intellect.
“A common theme throughout my paintings is the relationship between women and animals – specifically animals as guardians. This theme is related to times in my life where animals have inspired awe, created a sense of calm and comfort, and served as companions in times of loneliness. Conversely, they can also represent fear and loss of control, as non-domestic animals cannot be tamed.
“In most of my work, animals serve as symbolic transition in a woman’s life, whether that transition has a positive or negative effect”.
