“After developing a childhood interest in drawing, I made my way to classical training at Charles. H. Cecil Studios in Florence in 2001 for three years of study. I have been a full time professional painter since 2004, taking commissions all over the world for individuals, families, and institutions. I have participated in many group exhibitions and awards, as well as hold memberships with the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, the Royal Society of Portrait Painters and The Contemporary British Portrait Painters.
“This is a painting of Andrew Festing, one of the most prominent British portraitists of the last 50 years. He amassed an astonishing body of work featuring many figures of royal, political, and cultural life. He is a Northumbrian – as I am – and with the restrictions from the Covid lockdown, I went down to interview and paint him.
“I wanted this painting to reflect our conversation and some of the shared language of portraiture we share. We spoke of painting, what makes an artist, the challenges and vicissitudes of a commission career, along with anecdotes around many of his famous works. I had a friend come to film the interview, so a version exists in that medium too.”
