Jonathan Hayes is a contemporary painter whose work focuses primarily on landscape painting. Although the majority of his landscapes are inspired by his native North Carolina, Jonathan has also spent time painting in the U.K., Greece, Norway, and other areas of the U.S.

Jonathan’s art education began at the East Carolina University School of Art where he received his B.F.A in 1994. Following this he moved to Washington D.C. where he received his M.F.A from the George Washington University in 1998. While at GW, Jonathan studied with William Woodward, Frank Wright, and Arthur Hall Smith.

This painting was first painted as a small plein air painting in the Old Salem area of Winston-Salem. This area of Winston-Salem has often been a source of inspiration for Jonathan as it maintains a sense of the historical accuracy from the time the area was first settled by the Moravian Church in 1766. In the painting a young woman returns from an early morning trip to the garden in period dress common to the early inhabitants of Salem, N.C.
