Kyle Ma developed a love for art at an early age after being exposed to the works of the old masters through museums and art history books. Kyle states that painting allows him to express his viewpoint of our world. In 2010, he moved with his family to Austin, Texas where he began to seriously study oil painting under Elizabeth Locke. Here, Kyle learned the importance of having a solid foundation in the fundamentals to be a successful representational artist. Additionally, he took workshops around the country with master artists to further his art education.

In this painting, the artist traveled to Venice with several friends to paint the city and gather reference materials for new painting ideas. For this piece, he had an idea in mind of a view of the Santa Maria Della Salute from the Grand Canal. He took the water boat back and forth and made plein air sketches of the building on site. In this painting, Kyle aimed to capture the beautiful afternoon light hitting the marble building, as well as the gondolas and the Grand Canal in the foreground, making an engaging composition.
