“One of the things that I love about painting outside is that it helps me be more present and it pushes me to find meaning and beauty in any place. The light can change quickly outdoors and there are so many unpredictable variables, but I love this dynamic between intention and discovery, the attitude of openness it encourages, and the unique process of translation that happens when I go out not knowing what I’ll paint or how it will turn out, especially when painting a more fleeting moment like a moonrise.
“This painting was made in the studio, based on two small plein air paintings in the fall. For a large part of my life I lived with chronic pain — something that led me to begin drawing and painting. Though I love the energy and unpredictability of plein air, I’m often drawn back to moments of stillness and respite like this one.
“Along with painting, I am passionate about teaching. I am currently based in Seattle, Washington, where I co-direct a classical drawing and painting atelier.”
