Ruth Fitton is a portrait painter based in London. Self-taught, she has built a career based on her dedication to painting from life, her sensitive and imaginative use of oil paint, and her empathetic characterisations.
Years of studying human expressions and body-language through portrait commissions led to the decision, during the pandemic, to branch out into figurative work – with a strong emphasis on narrative, character and motivation.
“I’m always looking to challenge the well-worn theme of passive, dependent females. I want to create pictures whose subjects have their own motivation and agency, regardless of age or gender. My goal is to create paintings whose protagonists come vividly to life, and which ask striking questions of the viewer.”
Kashvi’s Choice explores themes of love and sacrifice, in a setting inspired by the lethal sandbanks and tidepools off the east coast of England. The models (who are sisters in life) are depicted in crisis amidst the tides, alone in a scene illuminated by stormy light. Kashvi, pictured on the right, takes both the physical and psychological burden – carrying her sister’s weight as she considers the deep waters below them.
