Lily in Red is a portrait of my girlfriend inspired by the work of Carolus Durand, Sargent, Travis Schlaht, and others…in which I used a deep, intense red for both her clothing and the background. The simplicity created by the uniformity of color throughout the painting lends it a certain modernity and a strong visual impact.

“This approach allows the color to become the painting’s second subject – abstract, almost as powerful as the portrait itself, which is realistic. The emotion emanating from the color evokes strong feelings such as passion, deep love, and a touch of mystery and poetry. The brushstrokes, sometimes quite free, add a romantic touch to the realistic style.

”This is my way of being present alongside the one I love without depicting myself.”
