Openly enamored with light, color, and the alchemy of paint on a flat surface, Scott Conary (BFA, Rhode Island School of Design, 1993) is a subject-driven painter who, through rigorous observation and repeated, sometimes aggressive revision, walks the line between abstraction and representation, intuition and craft, striving to create paintings that feel both inevitable and spontaneous. He paints everyday subjects with which we have complicated and often ambiguous relationships. Pulled from their context and presented directly, they speak to how we interact with the world and one another, and how we define beauty.
Shaping and fueling much of Conary’s work are his daughter’s experiences with disability. Though rarely the explicit subject, here she is depicted from behind, her young gauntness emerging from the dark. Presented with his usual directness but with the restraint of an attentive father, the painting offers a meditation on care, vulnerability, and dignity.
