The Light of Knowledge, 2025

Oil on Board

The Light of Knowledge was loosely inspired by the myth of Prometheus bringing the light of knowledge to humanity, and represents my own yearning for enlightment as a spiritual human and as a painter. The objects, motifs, and techniques in the painting each represent the myth directly, but also each particular influence and ‘stop’ along my artistic journey. Collectively I wanted to explore my interpretation of a ‘visual order,’ a concept taught to me through the Gammel lineage by way of The Atelier Minneapolis.

“The use of cast drawing and painting are cornerstones of modern Atelier training, and as a nod to this tradition I depicted deeply meaningful casts and masks collected at different times and places along my journey. The use of color, theatrical design, and direct painting reflect my time studying the work of Nelson Shanks and the methodology he established at Studio Incamminati. In terms of technical approch, I’ve implemented a direct painting technique with the use of glazing to enhance the dimensionality of the space, in an attempt to visually depict the beauty, the complexity, and the gravity of all I’ve learned.”
