Taylor Woolwine is an artist and art educator based in Cleveland, Ohio. He received his BFA in painting from the Columbus College of Art and Design in 2010 and his MFA in painting from Indiana University in 2014. Woolwine divides his time between his studio and his role as Assistant Professor of Art at Cuyahoga Community College.
“In my current observational paintings, I approach my subject matter through spontaneous trial and error. For better or worse, I’ve cultivated a very inefficient way of painting. Impatiently, I dive into images quickly, which results in many changes throughout the painting process. If you were able to x-ray my work, you would find an embarrassing number of failed attempts below the surface.
“This constant failing and revising creates a tense energy in my paintings that counterbalances my brain’s desire to overwork and overanalyze. My paintings start with glimpses of reality that spark my imagination – glimpses I can’t let go of. The ensuing hours of observation and paint-layering are my attempt to match the energy and vibration of a fleeting moment in time.”
