LEVELS/AGES
In this 10-week class, students will have the opportunity to carefully complete a portrait painting using traditional methods of oil painting. Time will be divided between a preliminary drawing, a painted study designing compositional elements followed by a final painting using a three layer process of underpainting, modeling stages, and glazing. Compositionally, students will have the chance to incorporate clothing and hands with a highlighted focus on the portrait.
OPEN TO ALL SKILL LEVELS – beginners as well as advanced students are welcome!
While our long pose classes typically run 6 weeks, students have consistently asked for an extended format that allows more time to develop a painting to a significantly higher level of finish/completion. The additional 4 weeks will allow for a deeper level of development at each stage — more time to refine proportion and structure, more time in the modeling stage, as well as a greater consideration of design and a broader composition — resulting in a resolved, fully realized painting.
Working with a live model students will hone their skills of observation, conceptual knowledge and material understanding to convey a naturalistic reflection of the sitter. Discussions will center around architecture of the portrait and the fundamentals of representation – character of the model, anatomy & structural conventions, and form rendering.
Short lectures will be held with the aid of master paintings, investigating the historical use of oil paint, from the Renaissance to the 19th Beaux Arts, and the use of material to evoke the hue variety, form and textures of life.
Chelsea will illustrate each stage of the painting process with a demonstration. Artist in residence and instructor Tyler Berry will also demonstrate over the course of the 10 weeks (not as an instructor, just painting alongside students in the studio).
Alongside demos students will receive one on one critiques helping them towards their independent goals.
