The NSMA Painting Competition is a celebration of artistic excellence, inviting global artists to showcase the finest in contemporary realist painting. This competition stands as a testament to the enduring allure and expressive power of representational painting. It provides artists with a prestigious platform to showcase their talent, engage with their peers, and contribute to the rich tapestry of representational art.

The competition, with its emphasis on artistic excellence, integrity, and engagement with peers, stands as a radiant beacon within the contemporary realist art movement.

THEME

Focusing on contemporary realism in painting, this yearly competition is intended to serve as a beacon for the highest standards in representational art, motivating the next generation of artists to reach for ever higher quality and impact in their work. All subject matter is welcome - figurative, landscape, still life, etc.

ELIGIBILITY

The NSMA International Competition is open to professional and student artists worldwide.

Finalists are required to exhibit their original artwork and be present for final judging and awards at the exhibition opening ceremony, as well as exhibit their artwork for the entirety of NSMA’s finalist exhibition.

AQUISITION AWARD: $25K

The winning artist will be awarded $25,000 and the painting will be displayed in the rotating permanent collection at the New Salem Museum and Academy of Fine Art.

EXHIBITIONS & PUBLICITY

An integral part of the competition is the exhibition and public recognition of the finalists’ works. The finalists' paintings will be showcased in a two month long exhibition at the New Salem Museum and Academy of Fine Art, providing them with a platform for wider recognition and appreciation. The award ceremony, coinciding with the exhibition's opening night, is not just a formal event but a celebration of artistic talent and achievement.

JUDGING & AWARDS

A panel of jurors will select up to 50 finalists based on artistic merit, adherence to the theme, and technical skill. Finalists will select a single Acquisition Award winner on the opening night through a private voting process in which each finalist must vote for a painting other than their own.
