2026 NSMA PAINTING COMPETITION

With nearly 1,600 submissions from artists in 44 countries across the globe, the response to the New Salem Museum and Academy of Fine Art's second International Painting Competition once again lived up to our greatest expectations. The overwhelming engagement speaks not only to the relevance of realist painting today, but also to the remarkable skill and vision of those working within this tradition. After a rigorous selection process, 63 exceptional works now hang in this exhibition, representing some of the finest contemporary realist painters working today. These artists share a commitment to the pursuit of beauty, craftsmanship, and a profound expression of the human experience – values that have long defined the greatest works of art.

What distinguishes this competition most notably is its approach to the two Acquisition Awards – a $35,000 Grand Prize Acquisition Award, and a $5,000 Small Work Acquisition Award. Rather than a single juror or panel selecting the winners, the finalists themselves determined the recipients of each Acquisition Award at the awards ceremony on May 9th, 2026. Each finalist had the opportunity to cast votes for their favorite works in the exhibition – excluding their own – in a ranked choice voting system, ensuring that the museum acquires pieces that are not only of the highest artistic merit, but also ones that are most admired by the very artists who stand among the best of their field.

This year we are thrilled to newly structure the awards in a way that respects differences in scale while ensuring that both ambitious larger works and more intimate paintings are evaluated within a framework that allows their distinct strengths to be fully recognized and awarded. To address this, we have established a second Acquisition Award of $5,000 designated for small works (less than 22" on the longest side).

At a time when much of contemporary visual culture is mediated by screens and digital processes, this exhibition serves as a powerful reminder of the enduring significance of the handcrafted object. NSMA champions the intentional, physical, and deeply human act of painting, viewing original, meticulously crafted canvases as a vital and beautiful human achievement.

The 63 selected paintings invite viewers to immerse themselves in a tradition defined by a commitment to mastery and truth. These works, rich in form, light, and narrative, stand as a necessary counterpoint to trends that often prioritize concept over execution, showcasing a fusion of technical proficiency and profound personal vision. In this space, realism is revealed not as a mere copy of life, but as a dynamic, evolving artistic language where technical rigor and emotional resonance elevate one another, offering a complex and engaging experience for both the artists and the audience.

The NSMA International Painting Competition is more than just an exhibition – it is a statement about the future of painting. As NSMA continues to champion this tradition, we are proud to provide an essential platform to celebrate these outstanding artists, sharing their compelling visions with the world.

    • NSMA is collaborating with Michael Harding Artist Materials to offer $2,500 in fine artist materials as this year’s exclusive sponsor! Michael Harding is world-renowned for producing high-performance artist materials of uncompromising quality — grounded in the techniques of the Old Masters, made with ethically sourced ingredients, and formulated for the demands of today’s serious painters who demand the best. The company produces paints and mediums with exceptional color, durability, and handling. Every formulation is made with integrity, precision, and the belief that artists deserve tools worthy of their craft. This prize is chosen at the Awards Gala by NSMA Director, painter Michael Klein.

  • PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD – $2,500

    • Voting for the People's Choice Award is open to all museum visitors during the length of the finalists' exhibition, and the winner will receive $2,500. The response to this award last year vastly exceeded our expectations – museum visitors  loved voting, and due to the responsibility given to them to vote for their favorite piece in the show, visitors were far more engaged in discussion and debate about the artwork than we usually observe. Museum attendance soared as visitors invited family and friends to vote alongside them.
